- A lovely book full of lovely stories by John Steinbeck, whose delicate grasp on words and language is nothing short of breathtaking. I'm not sure I have anything to add that hasn't yet been said before. The Long Valley is a collection of stories, some endearing, sweet and charming, others unnerving and disheartening, but all a wealth of humanity.
- John Steinbeck, born in Salinas, California, in 1902, grew up in a fertile agricultural valley, about twenty-five miles from the Pacific Coast.Both the valley and the coast would serve as settings for some of his best fiction.
Context
Originally titled “The Fool”, Steinbeck’s “The Harness” appearedin The Atlantic Monthly in June 1938 before being includedin the collection entitled The Long Valley in September ofthe same year. The protagonist of the story, Peter Randall, isdepicted by Steinbeck as one of the most admirable men in theSalinas valley, an individual who seems wise in business andpersonal judgment and whose strong character is reflected in hisupright and unbending physical posture. His neighbors often followRandall’s personal decision making, mirroring his actions becausethey consider it as a good, safe conservative thing to do.
